Why Strawberry Picking Is A Great Activity For Kids

0

Yesterday I took the kids strawberry picking with some friends as a fun activity for the day.

It was very muddy in the patch but still lots of fun. I loved seeing the kids’ faces as they found what they called their “perfect strawberry“.  Each one seemed better than the last one they picked and they kept going up and down the rows until their little containers were full to the brim.

Although it’s not the cheapest activity you will do these school holidays it is definitely worth it. The strawberries not only taste amazing but the smell as you walk through the patch is mouth-watering. The whole ‘knowing where your food comes from’ concept is reinforced to the kids and they have the satisfaction of picking only the ones that they deem ripe and ready. Power to the kids!

We made a day of it and took along our picnic rug and some snacks to have after the picking. The farm we visited also has a very good cafe with the most amazing strawberry ice-creams!! That in itself, is worth the trip…

Our group ranged from 9-2 year olds with them equally enjoying the experience. (Although the concept of not eating them straight from the patch was lost on my 2yo!!). Strawberries are in season generally from June through to October, so this is the perfect time of year to go.

Once we were home, we also had our freshly picked strawberries for dessert dipped in a little bit of melted chocolate. Yum.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our patch to plate experience.
