Tips for Stopping Swimmer’s Ear

This year after living in our 2 bedroom home for 18 years, we finally got around to renovating and putting in a fantastic swimming pool. It looks great and the kids were super pumped for their first swims (it was finished on Christmas Eve 2014!).

Everything was going swimmingly (see what I did there haha) for about three days when my eldest started complaining of a sore ear. After checking things ourselves and finally heading off to the doctor, he confirmed that it was Swimmer’s Ear … which is really just an infection in the outer part of the ear.

Having a brand-new pool, a hot summer day and telling your children that they can’t swim for a week is a total bummer … trust me!

No sooner had his ear begun to get better (with antibiotic drops which are annoying enough to remember) than the other son’s ear became sore and finally my youngest daughter had a week out of the pool too. Then we cycled back to the eldest and I’d had enough!!

I was feeling a bit stupid spending so much money on a swimming pool and not being able to get the whole family in for a swim … So I started googling of course haha

Swimmer’s Ear isn’t actually caused by swimming but rather any moisture from rain, sweat or even showering which usually gets trapped in the ear by a build-up of earwax. Everyone’s ears produce earwax and it’s a natural process for keeping the ear canal clean and healthy, but when it builds up it can block the ear making it hard to hear or trapping moisture.

The Solution

I realised that to stop the infections we needed to prevent a build-up of earwax, and also to help the ear dry out after it got wet.

There are a few products on the market such as the Audiclean wax product and wash product. The Audiclean Wax product helps to remove wax build-up from the affected blocked ear and Audiclean Wash is a preventative wash to stop it building up too much in the future. In combination I figured they would deal with the wax issue.

Audiclean Swimmers Ear helps the ear canal to dry after it’s been wet, so I try to remember to get my children (and myself) to spray it into our ears a few times after we swim or any time they get wet. We weren’t perfect at remembering but we definitely noticed that a little bit of prevention kept us in the pool a lot more for the second half of the summer.

I like the fact that the Audiclean wash and wax is made from natural ingredients and doesn’t have aggressive solvents or chemicals in the mix.

So if you struggle with outer ear infections or swimmer’s ear is keeping you from enjoying the great outdoors … make a plan to avoid them by reducing wax build-up in the ear and keeping it dry with the range effective products from Audiclean.

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare professional.

Being a mum to 3 kids (one of them full time at home with me) and trying to juggle everything became pretty crazy.
