6 Things Lurking in Your Bathroom That You Need To Be Aware Of

Bathrooms are one of those places that tend to get very disgusting very quickly.  The constant hand washing and teeth cleaning and beard trimming and showering and toileting make for a hub of mess and grime. Not only are they used over and over during the day but they also become a hotspot of germs as anywhere humans interact with regularly with the added element of moisture you have for yourself a breeding ground of bacteria and filth.

Since having our number 3 the bathroom has become a favourite room in the house as who doesn’t love a warm shower or bath and the satisfaction of pumping a bottle over and over where slimy goo comes out.  I try my best to keep it as hygienic and healthy as I can for the little guy as he spends a lot of his time on the floor of the shower and bath and touching all of the things.

I did a little research on the interwebs and found out the top 6 things lurking in my bathroom that I needed to be aware of. Funnily enough the biggest health risks in our bathroom to the little guy were the chemicals we were using to clean it with.

  1. Bleach– Did you know that household bleach contains sodium hypochlorite which is a chemical that can cause damage to your skin and respiratory system if you inhaled.   If you mix it with ammonia, toilet bowl or drain cleaners then it can produce possible deadly fumes.
  2. Drain Cleaners – Did you know drain cleaners can cause blindness if splashed in eyes, chemical burns on skin and are toxic to drink. I am all too aware of this as a school friend of mine’s daughter filled an empty lid of a Draino bottle with water after her dad had finished with it and drank from it.  Her dad forgot to put the lid back on.  She had to be put into a coma for 3 days before they could assess the damage that was done and get experts in to make sure she was going to be ok.  #truestory
  3. Mould and Mildew Cleaners – Similar to bleach they generally contain sodium hypochlorite and formaldehyde which is highly toxic and a known carcinogen.
  4. Toilet Bowl Cleaners – One of the main ingredients is Hydrochloric acid which is an irritant to both skin and eyes and damages kidneys and liver.
  5. Glass Cleaner and Polishing Agents – One of the common ingredients in these products is ammonia. The people who will be affected by ammonia the most are those who have asthma, and elderly people with lung issues and breathing problems. It’s almost always inhaled and can create poisonous gasses if mixed with bleach.
  6. Bacteria and Germs: Since the bathroom is one of the most moist areas of the house it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and germs which is why it needs to be cleaned regularly.

Did you know there have been over 250 000 cases of kids being poisoned in their homes by household chemicals.

A bathroom that’s free of bacteria and mould is a must. So it’s ironic that what is sending around 50 people a day to hospital are actually the toxic cleaning products we think are protecting us.

So what are the alternatives I hear you say because with germs and bacteria being an issue in bathrooms what do you clean it with if everything I have mentioned also poses a risk??

I remember the first time I heard about microfibre cleaning products and I was intrigued. It would have to be over 5 years now and initially I was a bit suspect because it was hard to believe a cloth and water could achieve the same results as chemical cleaners but time has taught me otherwise.

I can honestly say I have been using microfibre cleaning products in my house for years and have found them to be fantastic.  Not only are they saving our health they are saving us money.

ENJO was the first and best microfibre cleaning product on the market and is still Australia’s leading chemical-free cleaning brand.  They have recently updated their product range for the first time in 20 years.

The new look includes changes to selected fibre structures including rougher brushes on the fibres give greater cleaning power, and improvements to the soft and medium fibres greatly increasing absorbency.

All you need is water, as a single ENJO fibre  is 100 times finer than a human hair. Each of the ultra-fine strands lift, trap and hold dust, dirt, bacteria, grease and grime. The particles are only released from the fibre when the cloths and gloves are washed or shaken.

I road tested some of the latest bathroom products on my filthy bathroom this week and I have to say I am a fan.  I love how easy and quick it is to clean with ENJO products and that I can do it with my 1 year old in the room without fear of him being harmed by harsh chemicals.

  1. ANYTHING that makes cleaning the bathroom easier sounds fantastic to me and the fact that I could safely do it with two kids under three sounds amazing.

  2. This is a great review, thanks! I would also love to win this! As a busy mum of 2 – cleaning the bathroom needs to be fast, effective and safe for my family. These new cloths sound perfect! 🙂

  3. Cleaning our rather ancient bathroom which was built in the 1970’s and desperately needs renovation, is quite a challenge! Being so old, there is much mould! I can’t use strong chemicals though due to asthma, so would love to try Enjo as I don’t see foresee any renovations happening here until I am on the old age pension! Not only would it make cleaning easier, getting my teenagers to help clean would be easier too! 😛

I need products that are not gonna take my breath while trying to clean the shower being pregnant those potent smelling ones make me pass out

  5. My bathroom is pretty small, so it’s important to use good quality products that are chemical-free so I don’t inhale harmful fumes while cleaning. This ENJO pack would be perfect!

  9. Tracy Andreatta on

After years of cleaning with chemicals in the bathroom I’ve developed a sensitivity to harsh cleaners . I’d love to try Enjo so I can finally have a clean bathroom without the chemical headache .

  10. Rosemarie De Bari on

I like to spend the least time and effort possible cleaning my house – these products look like they’d help me with that!

  11. With 3 young boys I am forever cleaning my bathroom. This would make it so much quicker and easier. It would be so great to also use no chemicals!!

  12. I’d love to win so I have a helthy bathroom for my sons as well as making sure no chemicals are leached into our septic tank

  13. With a husband and four kids, non chemical based cleaning products to quickly and easily clean the bathroom areas is important to my family’s health

  14. I’ve been trying to move towards chemical-free cleaning since having baby 2. My first and I are regularly sick and I feel like the cleaning products commonly used these days are affecting our body’s abilities to fight the bugs we are exposed to, which seem to increase ten-fold when children are around! I struggle to keep on top of the cleaning with 2 bubs under 2, so anything that can help and is better for my family is welcome!

  15. I love Enjo products. My mother raved about them a decade ago when she was embracing her hippiedom and living in Byron. I’ve used them at her place but was never in the financial position to buy for myself. I’d love to be able to keep chemicals away from my kids while also doing something better for the environment!

  16. I hate cleaning the bathrooms (all that hard work scrubbing and then feeling dizzy and sick from the chemical fumes) which means I leave them as long as possible which means they are worse to clean in the end! I need to break the cycle and it sounds like ENJO may be the way to do it!

  17. Joanne Cardamone on

I’m asthmatic, both my daughter and me have eczema, so going chemical free is not a choice, it’s a must. Enjo has been a lifesaver to keep our household clean

  18. My family is afraid of my ‘unclean scream’. Filthy bathrooms especially change me from happy human to monstrous being. Not only would this set help keep my bathroom organically pristine but my whole family would ENJOy me being less obscene.

  19. My husband is always saying that the fumes are terrible when I clean the bathroom. If I won this would totally be my excuse for him to clean the bathroom 🙂

  20. Wow this pack looks amazing and your before and after photos has me wanting my own! Anything for less chemicals I’m all for. We have a very old bathroom and a newly built one. I would love to try this pack out especially on my old one that doesn’t look flash I’m forever trying to make it look clean and recently went to the extreme and repainted the grout which took forever!! Hope Enjo can help make it look new again.

  21. Phillip Cunningham on

As our bathroom needs cleaning and the traditional cleaners you’ve described leave me not wanting to use them for fear of being poisoned.

  22. I’ve never liked scented cleaning products so doing without the chemicals is a great thing. And that soap scum! What a chore it is to remove. Bring on Enjo and its super efficient team of cleaning ‘tools’!

  23. This would be great for my old nasty pre renovation bathroom, i have the old basin and taps that looks stained and dirty, love to try and get it back to white!

  24. I would love to win this, as a family of 7, with1 bathroom, our 5 daughters are constantly in and out of the bathroom! Tending to the needs of 5 children mean I need a quick and effective way to clean every room & these products would be a lifesaver. They would allow me to clean a room that is so often neglected due to not wanting nasty chemicals around my children.

  25. I’d just love to win this gorgeous Enjo prize pack as Enjo is like the Prada of cleaning products… I would be so motivated to get my bathroom sparkling clean if I had these gorgeous accessories to help me!!!!

  26. Denny PRUSSIAN on

I’m looking forward to being a poppy for the first time and this would make sure my bathroom is spick and span for the little tacker 🙂

  27. Michelle Waters on
